In the piping world, NRS stands for Non-Rising Stem. Unlike OS&Y valves where the stem moves up and down, an NRS gate valve's stem only rotates. The threads are tucked away inside the valve body. When you turn the handwheel, the internal wedge climbs the stem, but the stem itself stays at a fixed height.
Why does this matter? Space is the big winner here. Because the handwheel height never changes, these valves are the "go-to" choice for tight spots-like cramped ship engine rooms or deep underground water lines where vertical clearance is a luxury.
