Signal Gate Valve
Keylion® Signal Gate Valve, also known as monitored OS&Y or supervised fire gate valve, is widely used as a key control component for automatic sprinkler systems. We fit an electrical tamper switch onto its threaded rising stem. When operators turn the handwheel to shut the wedge, the switch sends out a signal right away to the building fire alarm panel.
This mechanical‑electric feedback keeps your water supply fully open for emergency scenarios and meets NFPA safety standards. Many contractors place these supervised valves inside pump rooms and standpipe headers, where real‑time valve status monitoring is required to protect building occupants.

Installation Tips
When your team is bolting this Signal Gate Valve into the pipeline, please double-check the wiring of the signal switch before finishing the job. One common mistake we see on-site is pulling the signal cable too tight, which can snap the internal wires when the stem reaches its full travel height. We recommend leaving a small loop of slack near the bracket. Also, make sure the switch housing is oriented so that moisture won't collect inside the wire entry point, especially in humid basement pump rooms.
Regarding maintenance, you really just need to cycle the valve twice a year to ensure the wedge hasn't stuck and that the signal still trips at the correct position. If the alarm doesn't fire within the first two turns of the handwheel, the switch arm might need a slight adjustment. For bulk orders, we usually pack these in reinforced plywood crates with extra padding around the switch assembly to prevent transport damage.
FAQ
Q: What is the purpose of a signal gate valve?
A signal gate valve is used to control or shut off water flow, while keeping track of its open or closed state electronically. Fitted with a supervisory tamper switch, it sends an electrical alert back to the central fire control panel if someone closes or tampers with the valve. This setup keeps critical fire suppression piping from being accidentally shut down.
Q: In which fire protection scenarios are signal gate valves used?
We commonly apply signal gate valves for commercial, industrial and high‑rise fire protection projects. Typical installation locations are listed below.
Fire sprinkler supply lines, to guarantee consistent water supply for all building floors.
Fire pump suction and discharge lines, to avoid unintended shut‑off of the main water supply.
Fire hydrant and standpipe systems, where ongoing valve status monitoring is needed for emergency readiness.
Q: Where are OS&Y valves required by NFPA?
As stated in NFPA 13 and NFPA 20, OS&Y valves shall be fitted on fire pump suction lines to avoid turbulent flow, sprinkler main supply lines, and water supply control valves. These valves need electronic supervision, so they stay open and ready for fire suppression when an emergency takes place.
